| D.L. Drummond, high
school dropout and former roughneck, is pitted against a cunning
Wall Street corporate raider, Ramsey Croft, who will stop at nothing
to destroy the Drummond family dynasty whose Houston offshore
drilling company is under siege.
While D.L. battles terminal cancer, he is forced
to turn to his estranged son, Clay, for help. Embittered from
having lived in his father’s legendary shadow, Clay also
blames himself for his twin brother’s death during a rig
accident four years earlier.
Kate Drummond, the widow of Clay’s brother,
serves as a bridge between the two strong-willed men. She persuades
Clay to turn his life around and help the family through its crisis.
In the process, they fall in love.
Together, D.L and Clay devise a plan where the fate
of the company is wagered on the success or failure of drilling
a wildcat well in the Gulf of Mexico at a world record water depth.
Croft agrees to the deal, but forces them to accept
harsh terms and a nearly impossible deadline. Croft then finds
ingenious ways to make sure the drilling is never completed.
The odds become more heavily stacked against the Drummonds when
a
hurricane threatens to bring everything to a crashing halt.
